Breaking the Taboo: Why Women Need to Talk About Money and How Conversation Circles Can Help

Money is a complex topic that can evoke a wide range of emotions. Whether it’s stress, excitement, embarrassment, joy, shame, fear, or anxiety, our feelings about money are deeply intertwined with our personal experiences and values. It’s not uncommon for discussions about money to breed family tension, cause fights, or even ruin friendships. Yet, money can also be a source of gratitude, support, and meaningful experiences.

Despite the significant role that money plays in our lives, it remains a taboo topic for many people. But how can we make important decisions related to money without talking about it? How can we learn from the experiences of others and benefit from their financial wisdom if we don’t share our own stories and struggles?

At The Humphreys Group, we believe that having authentic conversations about money is essential for building knowledge and understanding around personal finance. For the past nine years, we have been creating opportunities for women to discuss the important aspects of personal finance beyond the numbers. These conversations foster a deeper connection to our financial goals and values, leading to better financial outcomes overall.

Our Conversation Circles are structured and facilitated to provide time for personal reflection and interpersonal connection. We include content and exercises that lead to concrete action steps, covering a wide range of topics. Past topics have included:

  • Giving with Gladness
  • Fiscal Unequals: Finding Common Ground with Friends and Family
  • Navigating Difficult Money Conversations with Loved Ones
  • What’s Your Worth: The Art of Advocating for Ourselves
  • Who’s in Charge: Your Head or Your Heart?
  • Apron Strings: Cut, Tied, or Tangled? Providing Financial Support to Adult Loved Ones

Each circle is guided by a specific topic, and participants can expect specific exercises and prompting questions to help them connect with the topic at their own comfort level. During the two-hour circle, we may break into pairs, do a writing exercise, and have time to share as a whole group.

Joining a Conversation Circle is an opportunity to be part of a supportive community of women who are passionate about exploring their relationships with money. In this safe, judgment-free space, you can share your experiences, learn from others, and gain insights that can help you make more informed financial decisions.

Final Thoughts

Money is an essential part of our lives, and our relationship with it can have a significant impact on our overall well-being. Whether we like it or not, money is a powerful force that influences the decisions we make, the opportunities we pursue, and the life we lead. Yet, despite its importance, we often feel uncomfortable discussing our finances, even with our closest friends and family members.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. We believe that talking about money openly and honestly is the first step towards building a healthier, more empowering relationship with our finances. Whether you’re just starting to think about your financial future, or you’re looking for new strategies to manage your money more effectively, our Conversation Circles are a great place to start.

So, if you’re ready to break the taboo and start talking about money, we invite you to join us at our next circle. There is no charge to attend, and you’re welcome to invite your friends, colleagues, and anyone who shares your desire to learn and grow. Our Conversation Circles are a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded women, build your financial knowledge, and take the first step towards a healthier, more empowering relationship with your finances. We look forward to seeing you there!
